Highlights of Jordan’s Healthcare Sector

Quality of Healthcare

Jordan’s healthcare industry is renowned for its high-quality services and well-developed infrastructure. Ranked as the best in the region by the World Bank, the country’s healthcare sector boasts a highly skilled workforce, with many professionals holding prestigious international degrees and certifications. Numerous Jordanian hospitals have earned top-notch international accreditations from institutions like Joint Commission International (JCI), showcasing their commitment to excellent patient care and the most superlative standards of health and safety.

Medical Tourism

Medical tourism in Jordan has grown significantly in recent years, thanks to the country’s reputation for providing high-quality healthcare services at competitive prices. With its proximity to Asia, Africa, and Europe, Jordan attracts patients from the Middle East, North Africa, and other parts of the world seeking a variety of specialized treatments, surgeries, and medical procedures. Jordan offers a comprehensive range of world-class medical services, including oncology, cardiology, medical transplants, cosmetic surgeries, fertility treatments, and much more. Amman was named the Arab Capital of Medicine at the 2022 International Healthcare Travel Forum.

Modernization and Digitalization

Jordan has been making considerable strides to digitalize many of its national services, and the healthcare sector is no exception. The use of latest healthcare technology, including solutions like telemedicine, has been on the rise in Jordan. Telemedicine has helped bridge the gap in healthcare services between urban and rural areas, providing consultations and other services to patients who are otherwise unable to access medical services and providers. It also helps lower the cost of healthcare for many individuals not covered by public healthcare, and reduces the risk of disease transmission, which has proved especially critical in recent years. Jordan has also begun implementing digital health information systems (e-health) to streamline healthcare data management, allowing for better collaboration between healthcare providers and enhanced patient care.

Robust Infrastructure and Support

Jordan’s healthcare infrastructure is robust and continually evolving, with more than 120 hospitals and medical centers throughout the country, including 71 private and 47 public health institutions that are actively providing patient services. There are more than 30,000 medical professionals in Jordan, which translates to a ratio of 27.8 physicians per 10,000 population - well above the global average of 16.4. Healthcare expenditure in Jordan accounts for about 8.9% of GDP, demonstrating the country’s commitment to providing accessible and high-quality healthcare services for its citizens.
